A BOOKX
I like to hold a book,
to dog ear it's pages,
to find the one I read last year
and wonder why I underlined the phrase,
"at my departing".

Smelling the binding,
hoping no one's watching
my preference in perfume.
x
But here comes Kindle.
Throw out a word
and an odorless tome springs back
like an echo
looking for a place to light upon.
x
Google, owning the art of conjure,
has the noble goal
to possess the world of words,
so we can click like katydids
and ride a wave of language.
x
Instead of burning books
I mean to collect and pose on shelves
a roomful of verbiage,
wrapped in as much dust as possible,
that motivates me to find
the one that's signed by Austen.

ah, it's a 'brave new world', isn't it! I've loved books since I was in grade school - I doubt that anything will replace that feeling of turning the first page and starting the journey - it's like the curtain going up - that said, I do think a device like the kindle has its place - I think of how many books I could load on a kindle for vacation, or how a student wouldn't have to carry school books back and forth, etc. xxo

I haven't handled a Kindle so not sure what the sensation might be. I hate getting sand and sun lotion on a paperback so can't imagine coping with a Kindle but I agree with Jeane about storing reference material. Nice poem!

I just love books, the feeling, the look, the smell. I have mixed feelings about Kindle. At first I was thrilled when the electronic readers appeared, but I don't want them to replace books.

I do that occasionally, too. Or leave bookmarks all over the gaffe and then when I go back to the book in question I wonder why I did it. Needless to say, I end up re-reading the text.
And your poem indirectly gave me the strongest reason why so far I have resisted Kindle. The smell of books. I had never thought of that element. Yes, you're right, nothing can substitute that fragrance.

Dog-earing books is one of my favourite pastimes. In fact I prefer a paperback to a hardcover so that I can destroy it...
