A BOOK
X
I like to hold a book,
to dog ear it's pages,
to find the one I read last year
and wonder why I underlined the phrase,
"at my departing".
x
Smelling the binding,
hoping no one's watching
my preference in perfume.
x
But here comes Kindle.
Throw out a word
and an odorless tome springs back
like an echo
looking for a place to light upon.
x
Google, owning the art of conjure,
has the noble goal
to possess the world of words,
so we can click like katydids
and ride a wave of language.
x
Instead of burning books
I mean to collect and pose on shelves
a roomful of verbiage,
wrapped in as much dust as possible,
that motivates me to find
the one that's signed by Austen.

ah, it's a 'brave new world', isn't it! I've loved books since I was in grade school - I doubt that anything will replace that feeling of turning the first page and starting the journey - it's like the curtain going up - that said, I do think a device like the kindle has its place - I think of how many books I could load on a kindle for vacation, or how a student wouldn't have to carry school books back and forth, etc. xxo
Hi Jeane-
You're so right..everything in its place..an ode to books, in any form..let's read!
Hi Lyn,
I haven't handled a Kindle so not sure what the sensation might be. I hate getting sand and sun lotion on a paperback so can't imagine coping with a Kindle but I agree with Jeane about storing reference material. Nice poem!
My sentiments, exactly, Lyn. You knew I would love this one!!
Not Austen Tayshus I hope!
Hi Derrick-
Thanks..I wouldn't mind the sand and sun lotion if I could be on a beach right now!
Hi Willow-
I sort of do know which slant you would take..good for the old-fashioned girls!
Hi rallentanda-
Nor Austen Powers either! Thanks..
I just love books, the feeling, the look, the smell. I have mixed feelings about Kindle. At first I was thrilled when the electronic readers appeared, but I don't want them to replace books.
Hi Deedee-
That's what prompted poem..if we'll ever get rid of books..of course not..all the rest is technology, which we have to have!!

This made giggle:
'and wonder why I underlined the phrase,
"at my departing".'
I do that occasionally, too. Or leave bookmarks all over the gaffe and then when I go back to the book in question I wonder why I did it. Needless to say, I end up re-reading the text.
And your poem indirectly gave me the strongest reason why so far I have resisted Kindle. The smell of books. I had never thought of that element. Yes, you're right, nothing can substitute that fragrance.
Many thanks for such a beautiful offering.
Greetings from London.
Greetings to a Cuban-
Thank you..one of the reasons I love comments is that I get to see things in my own writing that I didn't know were there!
Hi Lyn (again),
Woo Hoo! Congrats on winning the OMG award for this post! I feel your 'Haiti' post should win too, though for very different reasons.
Hi Derrick-
Is there really an OMG award? From...??? But thanks for letting me know..and for your kind words!!
Hi Lyn,
YES, it's over at 'Oh My Goddess' (aka 'Comedy Goddess' or 'Elise'). She hands them out weekly. Go here:

Hi again, Derrick-
What would I do without you..yes that is really nice! Thank you..mwahhh!
Dog-earing books is one of my favourite pastimes. In fact I prefer a paperback to a hardcover so that I can destroy it...
Bwahahahaha
I mean it, I love making it look worn. Though I have some old hardcovers that look worn and they warm my little heart.
Hi Mo-
Thanks for visiting..the truth is I don't have control over much either..books are easy, but bear in mind that the SPCB/ Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Books, may be on to us!!
