Cure-All

YESTERDAY I SEARCHED THE DUSTY
SHELVES OF MY BOOKCASE, AND
FOUND THE FRAGILE BOX, INSCRIBED
WITH THE LOGO, VAPO-CRESOLENE.
IT DIDN'T CONTAIN THE LAMP I
WANTED TO FIND, WHICH WAS MADE
TO HEAT A CREOSOLE SOLUTION
to cure what ailed the patient,
for instance:
x
Inhaling the vapors was thought
to cure Bronchitis, Spasmodic Croup,
Asthma, and Whooping Cough.
Also to be used for distemper of
horses and dogs, and respiratory
diseases of animals, and manufactured
by Vapo-Cresolene Co.
62 Cortland St., NY, NY.
Care should be taken the first 15
minutes to make sure the device
doesn't smoke or explode.
x
From the late 19th Century through
the mid- 20th Century, many substances,
prohibited today, were legally available.
Pan American World Airways promoted
in their menu, the purchase of a
Benzedrine Inhaler, (amphetamine),
which was an over the counter
product till the 1950's.
x
I haven't yet found the vaporizer to complete
the set. It's back there somewhere. Mine is
clear glass, not the milk glass shown
in the illustration.
X
I would never have begun the search
for the vaporizer if it hadn't been for
Willow's post yesterday about a
lovely oil lamp.
So thank you for the inspiration!

x

Maybe they didn't travel as fast in
old days, but they seem to have had
a smoother trip.

omg! what a fabulous little item! actually pleasing to look at and not a bit of boxy plastic anywhere! the exploding part a bit alarming though!

Jeane-
Thanks...I guess all of the additives were flammable..what a trade off!

This is really a unique little lamp! The precursor to the vaporizer! Glad to have inspired you to find it.

Wow! It actually may have cured those disorders but caused something worse! Inhaling creosole (related to creosote?) doesn't sound too healthy. A pretty little melter, though.

Natalie-
Thank you..not sure about sniffing this stuff, love to just look at it.. even cheap goods had style!

Willow-
It's funny where things will lead. We definitely don't live in a vacuum..thank you so much!

Deedee-
I think the trade off was rather steep..but folks bought this snake oil and more! Thanks...

Mista Jaycee-
I just read the instructions. Fill the lamp with kerosene, light the wick, put cresolene in the vaporizer bowl, inhale the vapor..and voila! you're cured!!! Easy.. Thanks for the good wishes!!

.....and did I tell you how fabulous I think your new header is, well, not exactly new, but the negative side is really interesting - negative in a good way...

Hi Lyn,

The is an attractive object and would probably make a good fragranced wax or oil burner today, so I hope you discover the lamp!

Lidian-
It was found in a dusty "junque" shoppe in Woodstock NY..very appropriate!

Jeane-
It is the negative..the shadowy, that makes everything go BOOOO! Thank you!!!!

Derrick-

Just look at the artfulness of this utensil. The designs of the modern world have really become boring. I'm thinking of the ugly white plastic humidifier we plug in when my kids are sick.

Butternut-
It's as if ugliness is a component of plastic..even common objects had style in those days! Those humidifiers, ugh...

That is beautiful. I have a brush set from what looks like the same era... I love those treasures.
