MAGPIE/ Prompt #26

photo/willow/magpie tales

MYTHOLOGY

Wrapped in wings designed by Daedelus,
Icarus flies,
trusting the father,
seeking the sun.

Wildflowers cushion his feet.
A cold rivulet trickles over the iron lip
of a watering vessel,
a sip for flight.

A moment for the butterfly
to choose a shaded leaf,
alight, or set
its journey on the brink of chance.

Icarus decides
to rise above Crete,
as certain of his voyage
as the moth.

The glowing orb
seals the Minoan's fate.

A glide too close to the sun,

feathers melt,
bare arms flail,
a legend commences.

As a passionate classicist and lover of Ancient Greek history, mythology has always fascinated me. Greek myths and legends have such a mystery, such a magic, they have elements of art and philosophy and so much more. And you capture this so wonderfully in your poem.

Thank you..How to explain? I think our unconscious is very powerful.

Hi Lyn,

I KNOW I never would have found Icarus in a watering can! I love all of this: the subtle rhyming, choice of words, but especially

"A moment for the butterfly
to choose a shaded leaf,
alight, or set
its journey on the brink of chance."

Original idea became an intriguing poem. For mythology fans, the UK author/poet Robert Graves wrote an intro. to the Greek Myths described on Wiki HERE

Hi Patience-
There sure is enough for us to tap into...thanks..

This is one simply exquisite poem-- like Sam I am passionate classicist and lover of Ancient Greek history, in my undergraduate studies did a thesis on the Minoan - Crete culture.

You had my undivided attention from the start to the end of this eloquent poem. This should be published.

the ancient Greeks continue to inspire!
I'm thinking of assembling another book of poetry...

Thank you..I do try to put the basic idea somewhere in the poem..part of the fun!!

Helena said...

You've a way with words, indeed. Great Magpie.

Greek Mythology was a favourite subject at high school, which has phased out now. Such a shame.

Lyn said...

Hi Lena-
Thanks for visiting..and we were lucky in the scope of our studies!

Lyn said...

Hi rel-
Thanks... A very good combo...A legend in my own mind??

I especially like the butterfly part. We all stand on the brink from time to time. And sometimes shooting for the stars is worth the burns. Very nice!

Lyn said...

Hi T-
I agree..the pause, and then the plunge..we need heroes!!
