MAGPIE/ Prompt #69

photo/ tess kincaid/ Magpie Tales

WHAT A SEDUCTIVE SEA SHELL, I fell into its spell immediately..words just appeared!!  Thanks, Tess, for Mag #69!!

SIREN SONG

Bobbing on a wave,
sand grits my teeth
as I climb to the apex of the crest
and fall into a moving odyssey.

Carried ashore by Homer's fate,
one cupping hand
will set me at his ear,

listen to my siren song,
and when my message
is cold and spent,

place me gently
on a grain of sand
for time to rub my skin to dust.

MAGPIE/ Prompt #61

                                         photo/ magpie tales/ tess kincaid

This enigmatic photo posed a bit of a challenge ...I'm so late this week to feel the spark!!  No one ever said Mag would be easy.  Thanks, Tess....

DREGS

A candle's beam
illuminates the goblet,
as I swirl a plea into the wine.

I hear a moth's whisper,
watch it fly into its fate.

Tiny wings float,
mix with vintage tears,
cheap wine.

Tastes like the Red Sea
before the parting.

MAGPIE/ Prompt #26

photo/willow/magpie tales

MYTHOLOGY

Wrapped in wings designed by Daedelus,
Icarus flies,
trusting the father,
seeking the sun.

Wildflowers cushion his feet.
A cold rivulet trickles over the iron lip
of a watering vessel,
a sip for flight.

A moment for the butterfly
to choose a shaded leaf,
alight, or set
its journey on the brink of chance.

Icarus decides
to rise above Crete,
as certain of his voyage
as the moth.

The glowing orb
seals the Minoan's fate.

A glide too close to the sun,

feathers melt,
bare arms flail,
a legend commences.

A Plan

ST. TERESA BENEDICTA of the CROSS (EDITH STEIN) 1891-1942
X
I WAS MILDLY SURPRISED TODAY WHEN I CAME ACROSS AN ARTICLE that seemed to connect up with my previous post. When coincidence presents itself, I appreciate how the world seems to flow. It wants me to pay attention. I don't know anything for certain, so I'm always pleased when all I have to do is follow the trail.
x
My last post discussed the bravery of a woman, an artist, whose great courage saved her from extermination in Auschwitz. This morning I learned about a woman, Edith Stein, who became a Carmelite nun and experienced a different fate entirely.
x
Edith Stein was born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau, Germany, (now Wroclau, Poland). She was a brilliant young girl, philosophical in outlook, and abandoned her faith at the age of 14. She became captivated by the autobiography of Teresa of Avila, and began her spiritual journey, which led to her Baptism in 1922. Twelve years later she took the name of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, becoming a Carmelite, as her namesake had. Her appointment as lecturer at the Educational Institute of Munich ended under pressure of the Nazis. She lived in Cologne as a Carmelite (1934-1938), then moved to the Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands.
x
The Nazis occupied that country in 1940. Dutch bishops denounced the Nazis, who arrested all Dutch Jews who had become Christians. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942.
x
Pope John Paul II beatified Teresa Benedicta in 1987 and canonized her in 1998. The artist, Dina Babbitt, also a prisoner at Auschwitz, survived after making a deal in her favor with the Nazis. You can read about her exploits in the previous post, "Survivor".
x
Edith Stein...St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, said," Whatever did not fit in with my plan, did lie within the plan of God.."

Marilyn

MARILYN MONROE/ JUNE 1, 1926- AUGUST 5, 1962
X
Can Marilyn ever have imagined herself to be 83 years old? Can we? But Marilyn had the destiny of a legend. And movieland fate seems to dictate a youthful demise for some beauties. I still can stare at that face and fall into it. Not always the acting, not the talent. Her voice made her into a comedienne. Her best effort for me was Sugar in "Some Like It Hot".
x
Pinpoints of her soul showed up in her eyes. That left me breathless. I am glad that she will be a peerless beauty forever. Which sounds as if I'm glad that she died young. There's an odd dichotomy there that I'm aware of. Of course I'd love to see her yet, as a stalwart octogenarian, and not a mystery never to be solved.
x
Marilyn, are you there? Are you listening? What would you have wanted?

Ghost Hunter

DR.HANS HOLZER/ January 26,1920- April 26, 2009
x
INVESTIGATOR OF THE PARANORMAL,
died at his home in New York City at the
age of 89.
x
A renowned parapsychologist, he was the author
of more than 140 books on ghosts, extraterrestrials,
and witchcraft, but also brought his eclectic taste
to the writing of several plays, films and musicals.
His most famous investigation was the notorious
"Murder in Amityville", (1979). He is credited with
the phrase, "The Other Side", and coined the term,
" Ghost Hunter", which was the title of his first book
on the paranormal, published in 1963.
x
He earned a masters degree in comparative religion,
and a doctorate in parapsychology. He called himself
a scientific investigator of the paranormal.x
x
And he was a mentor to me. We met because fate
drew a road map. Coincidence.
x
And because he'd heard about me. And I
of course knew who he was. He called me, about
ten years ago, or so. We're not talking about dating,
of course. We're talking about research.
x
He was a learned gentleman and it was a
privilege to know him. The scope of his knowledge
was impressive, and I'm very glad that fate saw fit to
bring us together.
x
Now here comes the funny part. I was
ultimately featured in one of his books, and I can't
possibly tell you which one, because then my
cover would be blown! But isn't it nice how many
different kinds of friends we can have?
x
So forgive me for being so elusive...hmm, maybe
mysterious. But what do you expect from someone
who's blog is called .....?

Date

SHORTCOMINGS OF IMMORTALITY

I made a date with Death

to meet him at the Pale Horse Cafe'.

I told him that I realized today

that I was bound to die, and most distressed

to have this mortal fate.

Why must I someday be know as "late?"

My crimson lips whispered the enticement

in his ear, not the first time

I faked a feeling for a thug.

He liked my life's breath
and leaned in for more......
