WE WON !!

                                       sydwalker.info

VICTORY AT LAST...Yes, winning is better than losing!  For those of you who have been sitting on the edge of your seats, wondering if the APARTMENT WARS will come to a fair conclusion, I'm absolutely thrilled to inform you that the people have won!!

The dispute between my landlord and Con Edison has come to an amicable conclusion.  BECAUSE the landlord changed the name of the company, Con Ed got confoosed.  I can't say I blame Con Ed, because when I called the landlord, I listened to a recorded message, new name and all, that was totally garbled.  Imagine!  Has that ever happened to you?

So poor Con Ed, who can fault them for feeling betrayed by a company that has gone through a name change operation?  And informing me when I called them, that the POWER is liable to be turned off any minute.  A big contrast to the landlord, who, when finally reached, had this to say, "naahhh".

I look forward to this occurring again next year, when I'm sure that the games will continue.  And folks, thanks for all your cards and letters.  I needed that support.

TURN-OFF

Tenants milling about, trying to go home.

IT'S GETTING TO BE A HABIT. EVERY YEAR OR SO, I receive a notice from Con Edison (the gas, electricty company) full of regrets. I immediately feel their pain. Because it will soon be my pain too...unless...
x
Alas, the management of the building I live in seems to be engaged in the Sherry House/ Con Ed yearly gotcha marathon. Maybe just to take our minds off impending terror trials/ strikes, disappearing subway routes, (due to renovations...where did that station go?), unmentionable inflation, etc. So I just received a neatly written note informing us that management has not paid a $1660.00 security deposit , and soooo sorry, but unless Con Ed receives the payment very soon they will have to turn off service to the commonly used areas of the building.
x
Hmmm, let me see. That would include interior lights, heat to the building, (now 16 degrees), garbage compactor, laundry room, and oh yes, ELEVATOR! A mere hop, skip and a jump for us to traverse 18 stories. And of course, no deliveries to be received, no visitors (or maybe) bearing flashlights or glowing candles, perhaps all the shrinks in the building meeting their patients on a landing or in the lobby, no light for postman in mail room...I'll stop now. BUT, this is nice...my own personal space, my apartment will not be affected, because I maintain such a fine relationship with Con Ed. I pay my bills. So it looks like I'll be able to flaunt my brightly lighted apartment, in the midst of a darkness that may invite my gothic imagination to take hold.
x
Last time around I called management in a panic...they asked me to hold...I'm still waiting. I found the supe (superintendant) who reassured me with the NY answer...Nahhh, ain't happenin'. Met fellow tenants clutching letters..did you get one too? I did phone Con Ed...Press 1 if you speak English...I finally got to press 7..very polite rep asked me if that was a form letter? Nothing to fear but fear itself... I actually bought into those winter games. Turned out, the supe was right. This time, pretty much a big yawn...What, me worry?

But what if?

The Clock Tower

THERE'S A TRIPLEX PENTHOUSE APARTMENT AVAILABLE IN A CLOCK TOWER overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and New York Harbor. It's available for $25,000,000. The price is more than double the amount previously paid for a Brooklyn home.

The main floor is dominated by four working clocks housed in 14 foot high windows, which provide unobstructed views out to four points of the compass, on top of one of the tallest buildings in Dumbo, a cobblestone neighborhood that went through renewal in the 1980's.
The clocks are synchronized to show exactly the same time.

A glass-walled elevator and 3 story floating staircase lead to the top of the tower.

There are 3 bedrooms on the 2300 square foot second floor.

At the top of the building is a windswept crow's nest.

One wonders who will buy this "home". Someone who's probably not too affected by the current economic downturn. A major star? Sports? Rock? An oil king? As they say, if you got it, flaunt it. Well, it's not me. Not only because it's sort of out of my league,(ha), but I get vertigo just looking at the photos. Or it could be rented out for a remake of "The Big Clock".

Thanks to the NYTimes, for the info and photos.

I Spy

THE WINDOWS OF MY APARTMENT ARE HIGH UP, AND OVERLOOK
A COURTYARD. I LOOK INTO THE SKY, SEE A DRIFT OF GREY. WHAT IF IT'S DRIZZLING, SHOULD I TAKE AN UMBRELLA? I CAN'T SEE
PAST THE BUILDINGS AND TREES.
X
So I turn on the TV to channel 999 and I immediately get a full view of the lobby, thanks to the inter-cam. I can now see, through large front doors, dimness, at 6:45 in the morning. But no umbrellas passing by.
x
The night doorman is pulling a large yellow bucket on wheels, for a final swabbing of the entry. He's stopping to open the door, then turns to answer the house phone. Who needs him at this hour? Could be a water disaster. This building is infamous, for even the walls have been
known to spring a leak.
x
There goes that snob Tommy, (who was arrested last week). Apt. 3J. Walking Misty, his Lab. A little on the early side? Did someone take care of Misty when he was taken away? He's back now, so was he arrested or not? Drugs, Mrs. Fields told me in the elevator yesterday. Anyway, Angel, the superintendent has keys to every one's apartment. Mine included. Lots of luck trying to find Milo, my cat. Or stop a flood. But that's another story.
x
Well, well, is that Betty, Apt. 12M, in the doorway, kissing, holding hands with someone? Does not look like her husband, or her son. She did change the color of her hair last week, put lots of blond streaks into the brown. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
x
Starbucks, across the street, must be open, 7:00 am. Here comes 7H's housekeeper, balancing 4 cups, and a bag of who knows what? Breakfast for the family.
x
Tommy's back. Misty's stopping to play with the night doorman, Santo. Really. We have Angel, Santo, and the doorman who walks all the dogs in the building, Jesus. Now what could possibly go wrong in a building with these wise men?
x
I can see more of the street now. Sun's coming up, quite clearly. Truck backing up in front of the building. Someone's moving in, or out today? I'll find out later.
x
Channel 999? Really convenient. Actually I'm only interested in checking on the weather.
