Illustration/ Freddie Langeler/ 1920's
THIS WEEK'S PROMPT for Monday's Child #39 features a lovely, fanciful illustration...who can resist such a lovely party!!
HAPPY FACES
We are the friends
with happy faces,
Benny Bunny
and Ozzie Squirrel
pay us a visit
in the park so sunny.
Every day
after lots of play
we sit in a circle,
you and me,
and sip pink milk,
purple hot chocolate,
and dip licorice twists
into blue sweet tea.
So let's have some fun time.
Get all those happy faces
to come to a party
in the sparkly bright sunshine!

THE DUST of EGYPT/ Poetry Potluck #28
Hathor, Goddess of Joy, Protector of Women
This really appeals to me...the idea of TRIPS, TRAVEL, and VACATION, for this week's Poetry Potluck #28. Come along...and be sure to check out the other travelers!
THE DUST OF EGYPT
Motes of crushed light enfold
a female figure, early dynasty,
seated beside an altar,
waiting for prayers.
One hand holds a votive bowl
carved and inlaid with lapis lazuli,
and shells from far off seas.
Ancient walls and floors
flake with scars of the ages.
A goddess is waiting for me.
Her other hand
clutches a charm unseen,
an amulet,
the secret of life?
Or a strip of papyrus
from the Book of the Dead.
One eye still blue,
cerulean like a royal sky,
untouched by time.
The other, lifeless,
concave, without sight.
She exhales a breath of ancient days,
enough to blow a speck of Egypt,
a souvenir,
into the corner of my eye.

MONDAY'S CHILD #38
Illustration/ Fernando Falcone
The Tea Party. Alice in Wonderland. Wish I was there. Leave it to Monday's Child #38 ,which asks us to write a piece for children. Which character would I be ? Who do I relate to the most? Let's see....
A GIRL NAMED ALICE
I am the other Alice,
not the famous one in Wonderland.
But just a girl
who, day after day,
keeps falling down a rabbit hole.
You'd think I'd be
a bit more careful by now,
but the hole keeps moving around
in a most magical sort of way.
So there I go
tumbling
down
again.
And when I see
a shiny pocket watch
in a White Rabbit's grasp,
I know it's time to reach for the key,
open the door
to the garden once more,
through which I'll fit
when I take a sip of "Drink Me",
in my very own Wonderland.

MAGPIE/ Prompt #58
photo/ tess kincaid/ magpie tales
THE LEAST
Shield me, it's the least you can do.
I've carried your weapons the distance.
You gesture like the Queen,
are you mocking me?
You called me your wild Rosemary
when I was your soothing salve.
I tended to your wounds,
old yellow bruises,
and bites by hounds.
You learned that heroes
are not always done in
by a daring sword.
You always healed.
All I'm asking for
is a touch of St. Ignatius' balm,
to lift my spirits,
a simple comfort, a touch,
so I can stop
being weary of pain,
of the chrysalis within,
and see a butterfly
finally released.

YOUR LYING EYES/ Poetry Potluck #27
THIS WEEK, Poetry Potluck #27, presents us with the intriguing premise of LIES, DECEPTION, and MISREPRESENTATION. Once again, they all seem to run together for me. I also just discovered the poetic form, Tanka. Seemed like a good opportunity to see where this will go. A Tanka consists of five lines. I wrote two Tankas, then realised that they could be combined to form one poem. I guess that's OK!
YOUR LYING EYES
Your blue eyes, they smile
and wink with a romantic
promise to embrace
only me, then you turn
to see the girl entering...
Floating an untruth
on waters brackish with mud,
who will be deceived,
to think the torrent will clear
and the lie become honesty?

MONDAY'S CHILD #37
Illustration/ Clara Burd
This charming illustration is this week's prompt at Monday's Child #37, for a poem especially for children.
A GIRL NAMED SPRING
Thank you, Mommy
for naming me Spring,
for buds budding,
grass growing,
sparrows soaring,
baskets of blooms
brimming over,
tulips nodding
their swaying heads.
Easter bunnies
hiding rainbow eggs,
a Lamb saving us all.
And for giving me a name
that everyone will remember,
at least once a year.
Thank you Mommy,
and here
are some sunny buds,
bursting into flower,
just for you.

MAGPIE/ Prompt #57
photo/ tess kincaid/ magpie tales
A bouquet of color for inspiration, and thanks to Tess for the challenge!
PURPLE
Deep purple stains the night,
seeps into my fingers
as I bathe in the surf of midnight.
Hang the shroud,
let color drain,
smooth the folds
when the time comes.
Clad in lavender,
dressed to disappear.
Then a blade
of grass,
a shoot,
morning's radiance
clutches a faint green sprout
that could be rooted in hope.

LAST MEAL/ Poetry Potluck #26
FOOD, DRINK, INDULGENCES...our choice this week for Poetry Potluck #26. Started to think of that game of what I'd like for my last meal..
LAST MEAL
Work begun comes to an end.
Tidbits that melted in my mouth,
Mars Bars and Mallowmars
will circle the platter,
before my eyelids cease to flutter.
Crusty loaves, freshly baked,
mounds of sweet butter to spread.
A cornucopia so full,
it's seams will burst.
A ripe peach to quench my thirst.
So pile my favorites high,
fried chicken, the guest of honor,
no aristocrat I.
Not ashamed to fill the menu
with plebeian taste.
Pasta marinara with a side of fries,
and if possible, a pastrami on rye.
For my last rites
I will request a whittle of chocolate,
the bitter sweet sliver
will melt on my tongue,
my choice for a final communion.

MONDAY'S CHILD #36
photo/ lissa
THANKS TO LISSA, ( copyright), for the lovely illustration that serves as an inspiration for Monday's Child #36. Always fun!
ALL EARS
I'm all ears waiting
for you to tippy-toe in
to read me my favorite tale.
The one where I become
the fairy princess
and a prince picks pink roses
just for me.
And my favorite bunny,
Sunny,
hops along by my side
and remembers to wake me
in the morn,
while Booster Rooster
sings Cock-A-Doodle-Doo
once more!!
Come right in,
so we can get started...
Once upon a time...

MAGPIE/ Prompt # 56
photo/ willow/ magpie tales
A tasty treat, I hope. A sliver of garlic always makes it better, I think. Another great Mag Prompt from Tess.....thanks!
THE VAMPIRE'S BRUNCH
A walk in the fog of dawn
might unleash a shroud of wings,
wakeful on the horizon of desire.
Searing eyes eat me before we touch,
and the toothy vampire will be happy
only when my bloody skin sticks to his.
Before he has the power to dissolve my soul
and send me straight to hell, I have something
to whisper into this demon's ear:
I've got a fat clove of garlic,
when smashed and sniffed,
will save a damsel like me!
A lei of Allium Sativum round my pale neck
may look like flowers to the impaler,
but if this old bat mistakes me
for a Vampire's Brunch,
myths and garlic
will ruin his munch.
Footnote #1:
When Satan left the Garden, garlic arose in his left footprint and the onion in his right. Remember to rub some Allium Sativum on chimneys and keyholes to keep the imp from coming in.
Footnote #2:
Alliumphobia/ fear of garlic.

A Haiku seems like a simple toast!! Other entries can be found..please look for them.
IDOL
Vermeer paints the girl.
A brush dips into splendor.

Expectations.....
ANDREW WYETH
EXPECTATIONS
I think of lowering my expectations.
I had in mind a world with open arms.
Yet I've felt a chill to my ambition,
and suffer as my bones sculpt into ice.
I listen to the beat of retro music.
Mellow has a way
to slow my dreams.
And tapping my foot
seems quite polite
for those dancing
a jig around me.
Looking over the edge
I see rejection gaining,
no matter that it shuffles
with the apathy of a snail.
My resistance curls
into the air like vapor,
and the mirror reflects
a proper dignity.
Like a stake in the heart,
the first kill of my desire
is tolerated with a smile.
I learn to approve of
the threadbare me,
and throw away
my childish intention.
This poem evolved from a poetry prompt in Poets and Writers Magazine in which we were asked to randomly pick ten words out of the dictionary and write a poem around them. I no longer remember the original words, but they really are there!

MONDAY'S CHILD #35
WILL TERRY
This little poem is for the prompt at Monday's Child #35. We are asked to write a piece of children's poetry or prose, based on this wonderful illustration by Will Terry, and to post it for all to see!!
X MARKS THE SPOT
Oooh and aaahhh,
alas and alack,
steady on guys,
there's no turning back!
X marks the spot
we're finally here!!
So if you were sniffling,
brush away that tear
The Wizard's map
showed us the way
to a mountain of candy,
a treat fine and dandy !!!
Hurray, this is the place
of lemon drop dreams
and enough chippy chocolate
to mess up your face.
The Wizard was right,
it's like winning the lotto.
Lucky for us,
X MARKS THE SPOTTO !!
