Winning Is Better Than Not...

Whitney Huston and Oprah Winfrey
x
WELL, THIS SENT A CHEAP LITTLE THRILL UP MY SPINE. There I was, wasting time on the Internet for the 400th time today,(as usual). Check the mail, delete the mail, browse Overstock, check bottom of the barrel specials, write a poem, think of Blog, check who's not blogging, check out Twitter, why did I give in? Crikies!!
x
And the NYTimes, like I own them and have to see if they're doing good. But they do update every 10 seconds. And gossip like the Enquirer these days. Who do you think had more ink on Adam Lambert? Guess again. So I write in to everything that says "Comment". Politics, foodie hang outs, instant celebs,(is it you, yet?). And lately I've discovered Laugh Lines/ cartoons that need a punch line. I'm hooked. Do I want to make you laugh? Does a fish have lips? So for a couple of weeks I nudged my funny bone, and today when I idly scoured the cartoon site... I did a double take! Because there was my toon...and I won, well 1st runner up..same prize as first place...NOTHING...but, I'm not a materialist.

Can they sue me for publishing their photo, my words? Hey, this is almost the end of the year of living dangerously, so what the heck. If the "intruders" got to shake hands with the Prez, surely I won't get into more trouble than they did for making a joke. Anyway, as they say, dieing is easy, comedy's hard. We''ll see.

My caption, (see photo)..." It's a great diet Oprah. All you have to do is lean forward like this and push the food away". Entered by Linny. My NYTimes byline. In my dreams.

First Star

Publicity photo taken in 1924.
x
Virginia Davis McGhee / December 31, 1918- August 15, 2009
x
VIRGINIA DAVIS BECAME THE FIRST DISNEY STAR AT THE AGE OF 4, she recently passed away at the age of 90. Blond and curly haired, she beat out Mickey Mouse, often thought to be Disney's first star. The adorable Virginia was the star of a series of silent films titled ,"Alice in Cartoonland", which featured her interacting with cartoon characters.
x
The young Disney, in the early 1920's, was facing bankruptcy. He received backing for the Alice series only if he would allow Virginia to play Alice. Mickey didn't show up till 1928.
x
Walt Disney first spotted the tot at the age of 4 in an ad, eating a slice of bread and jelly, smiling and licking her lips, (a filmed commercial, way back then!). She then became the first person to appear with animated characters.
x
The series were generally shot in a vacant lot. Virginia was asked to perform in front of a white cloth, strung up in the lot. Disney directed her to look sad, happy, or scared. Animated characters were added later. There were no rehearsals, and they filmed without a permit, left quickly if the police were spotted. Passers-by and neighborhood children usually became part of the movie.

In an interview in 2006, Ms. Davis/ McGhee recalled Disney's favorite instruction: "Let's pretend".

Bad Hair Day.

THERE ARE DAYS WHEN THE
MIRROR SHATTERS
when you look into it. That's because
you're having a bad hair day!
That shiny, swingy mop of yesterday,
is but a memory today. That suave bob
has collected into a ball of Brillo.
No amount of ironing or blow drying will help.
Give in...return to the eighties! To BIG HAIR!
You know you want to, nothing was ever
more fabulous than Big Hair. It was indestructible.
And always alluring.

It's fun to get together with your pals, plan a day around doing each other's hair. As you can see, even the wind can't spoil the style!

Trust me when I say that you can go from this parched frizz, to the smooth glow of Carrie's locks, (see below). Now grab a brush, turn your head upside down, and tease away!!

Carrie says that it is very easy to achieve this beguiling style..she never uses a hairdresser! Standing in a brisk breeze, back comb your hair, grab an extra strong
hair spray, and these luscious curls should fall into place.

Cher knows. On those days when she too can't
do a thing with her hair, she cheats a bit! And is
telling you the truth now! She has a few wigs that
she uses in a pinch. How else could she display
those blond, red, black tresses? Bet she had you
fooled that this was her natural Big Hair!

Adorable Drew has an imaginary cartoon friend
that she takes with her everywhere. Can you see her?
She also has imaginary blond hair, with the dark
roots painted in. Some days she switches, but she
always teases. She's proud to say that her hair
never moves! Are you ready for the runway? You and your friends
can have careers as runway models, if the '80's ever
come back.
