Morning Ghost...
MORNING GHOST
Not afraid of cupboards
closing and opening at dawn,
peeling paint,
passe' decor,
chintz roses
torn from the back of a chair.
A stained glass window,
on the high transom,
picturing a cherub,
splintered,
eyes woven together
by a spider's web.
Butter churns by an unseen hand,
a gust of wind
flutters a pale curtain
above the water pump,
and I am at the top of the stairs.
The cat goes down below
because that sunrise spirit
has good intentions,
sleeps quietly through the night,
the cat on my left,
the ghost on my right,
who on certain mornings,
rushes downstairs to start the coffee,
both wafting through the empty house,
and me,
not dead as long as she.

Another scary one, Lyn! But a ghost who'll start the coffee must be good!
ReplyDeleteHi Derrick-
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm aiming for..it's hard to get good help these days!!
I agree with Derrick. A ghost who makes coffee? And is it Fairtrade? :-) Bring it on!
ReplyDeleteFab poem, if a little spooky. But it's been raining cats and dogs (no pun intended :-D) over here and I am in the mood for a scary poem.
Greetings from London.
I can imagine everything you describe, Lyn, your poetry transports me to the world you have created. This is indeed a chilling poem, the sort that sends shivers down one's spine.
ReplyDeleteLyn this poem is one of my favorites of yours...always look forward to your beautiful poetry! :-)

Hi! I love this poem! A lovely hallowe'en treat. I wonder if I can use the picture of the ghostly cat for my blog. I will link back to your blog, of course. If you have the citation for the original picture (is it yours?) I would like to credit that too.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks,
Bethany
